REAL Regulation

Regulation Isn’t Just About Calming Down. It’s About Knowing What to Do Next.

Big emotions, challenging behaviors, difficult conversations, unexpected changes—we all experience moments when our ability to respond thoughtfully gets harder.

Being told to calm down isn’t always enough.

Knowing a coping strategy isn’t always enough.

And understanding what we should do doesn’t necessarily mean we can access that knowledge when we need it most.

REAL Regulation provides a practical framework for moving through those moments with greater awareness, intention, and understanding.

REGULATE. EVALUATE. ACT. LEARN.

Whether you’re supporting a child, leading a classroom, working with a team, navigating family life, or trying to better understand your own responses, REAL Regulation gives you a process you can come back to again and again.

When “Just Calm Down” Isn’t a Strategy

Most of us have learned plenty about what we’re supposed to do.

Be patient.
Make good choices.
Think before you act.
Use your coping skills.
Stay calm.

The problem is that these expectations often begin after regulation has already been lost.

When our nervous system is overwhelmed, accessing reasoning, communication, problem-solving, and learned strategies can become much harder.

That’s why REAL Regulation starts somewhere different.

Before we ask, “What should you do?” we ask, “What needs to happen so you can get to a place where you’re able to decide?”

That shift can change the conversation.

A Framework You Can Actually Use

REAL is a practical, repeatable process for navigating challenging moments—not by pretending emotions don’t exist, but by learning what to do with the information they give us.

R — REGULATE

Get to a place where you can respond instead of simply react.

Before problem-solving comes regulation. We learn to recognize what is happening internally and identify strategies that can help us return to a state where thinking and communication become more accessible.

E — EVALUATE

Understand what’s happening before deciding what to do about it.

What happened? What are you feeling? What do you need? What information matters? Evaluation creates space between the reaction and the response.

A — ACT

Choose an intentional next step.

Once regulated and able to evaluate the situation, we can make a decision and act—with greater awareness of ourselves, other people, and the situation we’re navigating.

L — LEARN

Use what happened to prepare for what comes next.

Every experience gives us information. Reflection helps us recognize patterns, understand what worked, identify what didn’t, and build skills we can carry into future situations.

Regulate. Evaluate. Act. Learn.

Not perfection.

A process.

REAL Regulation in the Real World

REAL Regulation in the Real World

REAL Regulation isn’t intended to live on a poster, in a binder, or in a training people forget a week later.

It’s meant to be used.

In classrooms.

At home.

During difficult conversations.

In moments of frustration.

When expectations change.

When someone becomes overwhelmed.

When a team isn’t functioning well.

And even when things go right—because understanding why something worked is part of learning, too.

The goal isn’t to eliminate emotion or prevent every difficult moment.

It’s to develop a process for navigating those moments more intentionally.

Ways to Work With Us

REAL Regulation services are designed to meet people and organizations where they are.

Whether you’re looking for individualized support, trying to create meaningful change within a school or organization, or searching for a speaker who can make regulation practical and relatable, we can help determine the right starting point.

Coaching

Understand Your Patterns. Build Your Tools. Practice What Works.

Knowing about regulation and being able to use it in real life are two different things.

REAL Regulation coaching creates space to examine the situations you’re actually experiencing and apply the framework to them.

Rather than offering generic strategies, coaching focuses on understanding patterns, identifying barriers, developing practical approaches, and learning how to use REAL Regulation when it matters.

Coaching may be appropriate for:

Parents and caregivers navigating challenging family dynamics
Educators looking for practical ways to respond to behavior and dysregulation
Professionals and leaders working through communication, stress, or interpersonal challenges
Individuals who want to better understand their own regulation patterns

Coaching is provided by Paige Hyland-Rhinehart and Dr. Carla Ureña Hutchinson.

Consulting

Change the System, Not Just the Moment.

Sometimes the challenge isn’t one person.

It’s the environment around them.

Policies, expectations, communication patterns, classroom structures, organizational culture, and established responses can either support regulation—or unintentionally make it harder.

REAL Regulation consulting helps schools and organizations look beyond individual incidents and examine the systems influencing them.

Depending on the organization’s needs, consulting may include:

Reviewing existing practices and approaches
Identifying patterns and barriers
Supporting leadership and staff
Integrating REAL Regulation principles into everyday practice
Developing practical tools and implementation strategies
Helping teams establish shared language around regulation
Supporting sustainable change rather than one-time intervention

Consulting is provided by Paige Hyland-Rhinehart and Dr. Carla Ureña Hutchinson.
